Causes
There are different factors which can cause the stomach or small intestine lining to break down. Several of the causes include:
Helicobacter pylori- This is an acid-resistant bacteria which is usually lives in the mucus layer. The mucus layer covers and protects the tissues which line the stomach and small intestine. The Helicobacter pylori bacterium that is in the mucus layer attaches to the digestive tract and prevents that area from forming the protective mucus. This bacterium causes an inflammation in the stomach’s inner layer, which then produces an ulcer. There is no clear evidence of how Helicobacter bacterium is spread. But it could be transmitted through person to person by close contact. People could also get this bacterium through food and water.
The regular use of several pain relievers- Certain prescription drugs and recreational drugs can irritate or inflame the lining of the stomach and small intestine. Prescription drugs are the drugs which are prescribed for people to take. Recreational drugs are known as over the counter drugs which people can go purchase. These pain relievers can include aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Aleve, and several others.
Other medications- Medications that are used to treat osteoporosis can also cause peptic ulcers. Medications such as potassium supplements can cause peptic ulcer as well.
Immoderate drinking of alcohol
Smoking or chewing tobacco
Smoking cigarettes
Radiations from treatments
Caffeine
Physical and emotional stress
